WinXP update stopped internet access thru RH8.0 gateway
Posted by Scott Navarre on March 2nd, 2004

Hello,

One of my clients did an automatic Windows XP upgrade, and this caused her
internet to stop working thru a gateway to their RH8.0 server. The other
computers on the LAN (which didn't upgrade) have their internet connections
still working. Everything else for her still looks fine -- she can ping the
RH8.0 server from her PC, she can run a remote terminal (PuTTY), she can
print to the server's printer, and she can go into the server's SAMBA thru
her 'My Workgroup Computers' link.
But when trying to ping an IP address on the internet (actually, the DNS
of her ISP) from her PC, it gives "Request Timed Out" errors. I can ping
this address from other PCs.
So, what could cause this to happen? And where should I look to fix it?
Is there something on a Windows PC that can cause Red Hat to stop IP
masquerading for that PC only?

Thanks in advance,
Scott Navarre

Ha ha ha. I just thought someone else may have run into this problem with
PCs networked to their Linux servers...
