Administrator password
Posted by Dan on October 5th, 2005

When I logged on to my computer it would ask for a password, but would accept
and blank password. I wanted to skip this step so I followed the directions
with the userpassword2 help from this site. Now when I log on I get an error
that reads; "The system could not log you on. Make sure your username and
domain are correct then type your password again." Administrator comes up
automatically in the ID box. I am sure I have the right password.

Follow these steps exactly:

Automatic Login :
http://kgiii.info/windows/XP/general/auto_login.html

Note that you will want to use the NORMAL account name that you'd be signing
into... Where it says "administrator" you'll likely want to replace that
with the username and (none in your case) password that applies to the
account you want to be set as the default.

I can't follow those steps because I can't get that far.

What happens if you press CTRL + ALT + DEL and then type in your username
(it shouldn't be administrator) and leave the password field blank? From the
sounds of things when you went to edit the OS to allow you to log in
automatically you left the username of Administrator in the field instead of
typing in the one you usually log on to. So, press CTRL + ALT + DEL and type
in your other username and see if you can get in that way. Beyond that
you're potentially looking at a nice (simple really) repair installation
which doesn't usually result in file loss but does require that you update
your system at the Windows Update site again.
