- After XP upgrade, PC hangs, resumes, hangs, resumes. .... HELP!
- Posted by Wildmanwilly on May 6th, 2006
Compaq 800mhz box, solid performer with Win 98SE. Finally put XP Pro on and
it typically runs for a while, then will go into a cycle of freezing
everything, hanging for 20-50 or so seconds then coming right back alive.
Rebooting sometimes helps, sometimes not. Reloaded XP twice. Cleaned filter
and checked fan so heat doesn't seem to be an issue. When I look at the Task
Monitor, it too locks up, going from a 20% CPU load to fully locked up, and
locked up so fast the Task Monitor can't even update itself to 100% CPU
cycle, then it drops back to 10-20%. Can't tell which application sends it
into outer space but this is driving me NUTS!
Are there any shareware tools for monitoring what is running and hogging the
cpu that might catch what Task Mgr can't ? HELP_HELP_HELP!

Did Compaq have drivers for XP? If not, XP isn't supported on that box.
Also, XP (and other modern operating systems) are far less forgiving of
flaky RAM than Win9x/ME. Test your RAM. I like Memtest86+ from
www.memtest.org.

(Macro for spyware etc, but it will help you out)
download and run Process Explorer
http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilitie...sExplorer.html
Double click on the process(s), reading it's image and command line
will tell you where to find them. stop the process and delete the
file/directory.
Run Regedit and search for the file name(s) deleting them as you find
them.

Did you run the upgrade advisor before doing the upgrade and get XP
compatible drivers for all the hardware?

To add: in PE under View - Update speed, you can change the refresh
rate of the program to hopefully catch what's giving you a problem

Malke: Found the site, saw a bazillion options to download and was
overwhelmed. Which is the simplest pkg to download? After it is downloaded,
how do I install/execute what I downloaded?
Thanks, Malke.

Rock: Yes I did, both times. (original install, then re-install). No change.
What is baffleing is that it always comes back out of the 100% CPU busy
cycle..it doesn't lock up, it just hangs, then goes back down. And as I said,
it happens so fast that somehow the Task Mgr isn't catching the process that
is maxing -out the CPU, to the Task Mgr display doesn't get updated with the
offending process's name.
Maybe I need to have the problem arise, then one by one, delete processes in
Task Mgr until (hopefully) the CPU doesn't get max'd out....whatcha think?

First you need to make sure all the drivers are current and XP
compatible as Malke indicated. If there is still a problem then try
some clean boot troubleshooting but first eliminate the driver problem.
