Arrange by file name/number problem
Posted by N O'C on November 8th, 2005

hi,

lately ive been having a problem with the order of my photo files. i
have them all named in this format: YYYY-MM-DD (#)
eg 2005-11-08 (22).
this is so i can chronologically order my photos by simply arranging
them by name. i have been renaming them this way for 3 years in batch
using just windows XP. so the numbers begin at (1) and not (01). [if
they did start at 01, i would have no problem]

lets say i have 22 files in a folder.when i used to click sort by name,
they would all raagnge like so:
2005-11-08 (1)
2005-11-08 (2)
2005-11-08 (3)... etc
to
2005-11-08 (21)
2005-11-08 (22)
this is perfect, just as i want it.

but now what happens is this:
2005-11-08 (1)
2005-11-08 (10)
2005-11-08 (11
2005-11-08 (12)...
all the way to
2005-11-08 (19)
2005-11-08 (2)
2005-11-08 (20)
2005-11-08 (21)
2005-11-08 (22)etc

this is most frustrating because now the files dont go in order. i
remember when i had windows 98 that it used to order the files in this
manner as well.

does anyone know how i can restore this setting to the original windows
xp setting. any help would be greatly appreciated.
thanks

NO'C

Hello N O'C

It sounds like somehow your settings have changed to order files in the
old Windows 2000 way, rather than the XP default, which is what you
want.

Here's an article which explains the difference and how to change it:

The sort order for files and folders whose names contain numerals is
different in Windows XP than it is in Windows 2000
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=319827

You'll need to reboot to have the change take effect.
Hope you get it sorted :-)

Hi,

Correcting Windows XP Sort Order
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_s.htm#so

Incorrect Sort Order in Windows Explorer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default...;EN-US;Q318872

The sorting method is changed in Windows XP. The method that is used for
sorting is described at the following MSDN Web site: StrCmpLogicalW Function

Change the Sort Order Back to W2K Style (Line 107)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

To use the Regedit: Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it
and answer yes to the import prompt. REG files can be viewed in Notepad by
right clicking on the file and selecting Edit.

Added info:
