I use XPHome SP2; CPU, 2.8P4 800FSB megL1 cache HT; Intel chipset MB; 160GB
dedicated ATA drive; latest XP updates.

Project: Capturing VHS movies, editing, then rendering them to DVD.

Problem: In the rendering phase, the audio slowly drifts ahead of the video.
In a 1.5-hour movie, audio will move about 6 seconds ahead.

I have used a variety of capture cards and USB2 capture devices. I have
also used a variety of capture/edit programs, from Turtle Beach, Pinnacle,
AverMedia, etc. but the problem persists. I have tried them in every
combination I can put together, but the problem persists.

The initial capture is to a DV or Mpeg file. Sync seems ok when playing
back in the editing program's window. It is somewhere in the rendering and
processing that the problem appears. I have tried disabling processes using
msconfig, deleting processes using task manager. I have configured for max
performance. I have tried disabling HT. In short, I have shut down just
about everything I can think of. My sound card is a high end Blaster with
up-to-date driver. Current capture card is from AverMedia. Video card is
high end ATI chipset. (I have tried other cards too, but it makes no
difference.)

Does anyone know if the problem might be somewhere in XP? If anyone has
ideas, I would really appreciate hearing them.

Since you've eliminated all else, it's
got to be a problem with the DVD encoding
app.

Try another and tell us what you're using currently.

I have used Pinnacle Studio 9 with up-to-date patches, AverMedia's
capture/rendering program, NeoDVD Standard, Power Director Pro, and Dazzle.
The problem is exactly the same regardless of the software. I am not using
anything right now, but can use Pinnacle, AverMedia, Power Director Pro.
Other steps I have taken include disconnecting the cable modem and wireless
networking hardware. I really appreciate your interest. Any ideas would be
most welcome.
I am not beyond neglecting the obvious, and will be delighted if I find I
have merely done something stupid -- it won't be the first time.
