- Auto insert notification - how do I turn it on?
- Posted by Roger Van Loon on April 25th, 2006
In Windows XP Professional, when insering a CD Rom in the drive, I
used to get prompted to choose an action to be taken. Now I
don't.
Right-clicking on the drive in My Computer, then choosing properties,
and editing the AutoPlay tab does not help.
Apparently, the auto insert notification has been turned off. How do I
turn it back on?
Roger.

To change how your computer handles multimedia content
1.. Open My Computer.
2.. Under Devices with Removable Storage, right-click the device you want,
such as a digital camera or CD-ROM drive, and then click Properties.
3.. On the AutoPlay tab, click the multimedia content type you want to
change.
4.. Under Actions, click the action you want Windows to perform when it
detects the media type you selected.
Notes
a.. To open My Computer, click Start, and then click My Computer.
b.. Your removable storage device must be attached to your computer for it
to appear in the My Computer folder.

As I said - that doesn't work. I did set everything to "prompt me each
time to choose an action." I'm not being prompted.
So, how do I turn on the auto insert notification in Win XP?

Try the google search with "xp auto insert notify" - quite a bit of
info there to sort through.

Thanks, Mikey, I was there too. Lots of info there to turn it off -
but turning it on is another matter, apparently. Seems the only thing
to do is changing the registry - which I should study up on, before I
do it.
TweakUI didn't help.
I think the Auto Insert Notification was turned off just by my
inserting a CD with some slideshow (which I made myself with a program
called Magix). Hard to believe that MS can't remedy that, isn't it?
I couldn't find any help in the MS Knowledge Database either.
Any help would be appreciated.
Roger.

Thanks, Mikey.
But - I did install the patch for the registry to turn it on - there's no change
(not even after restarting the PC).
I'm giving up.
