- Automatic Updates
- Posted by REDWAGON on October 2nd, 2005
Running Windows XP Home, SP2.
I always get a little red colored shield on my taskbar when I boot up y
computer and a message that comes up every time saying I need to do an
update. I DON'T WANT TO DO AN UPDATE, SO, how in the world do I turn off this
annoyance ??
I have gone to the control panel, clicked on the Security Icon and tried to
remove it there but have not been successful. Would appreciate someone
telling me how to get rid of it. Thanks

Actually the little red shield is telling you that MS has an update ready
for XP if you wish to turn notification off
right click MyComputer/properties/Automatic Updates..........and click Turn
Off Automatic Updates

Thanks for the suggestions. However, I have already been to "My
Computer"--Properties--Automatic Updates and turned it off. I have also been
to the control panel sewcurity and Firewall icons and have done everything I
can think of to get this Da>* SP2 crap turned off and it still keeps coming
back evert time I boot up.
I am running Symantec's Norton Internet Security 2005 and have never had any
problems even when I was running with XP1 stuff. So, any other suggestions ?
I'm certainly willing to try anything (well, not re-installing a win XP Home
SP1).
Thanks again

Open the Security Center applet which is presnt under the Control Panel
and open it. On the left side, under Resources click- "Change how
Security Center alerts me". Set it to the way you want.
Otherwise:-
Start>Run>Services.msc>Press the Enter key/Ok button.
Now from the list of services present under services(local) find out
"Security Center", double click on it, set "Startup type"
to Disabled.Apply/OK.

ALL RIGHT !! Thanks S.Sengupta---Running services.msc and running down the
list to "Security Services" and disabling it and then clicking on "Stop", did
the trick. It's still kind of odd to me that I couldn't have accomplished the
same thing by the other methods. Anyway, I appreciate your continued support
on my problem.
Thanks again---(I guess all things work if you just know how, huh) ?
