Automatic Updates does not Automatically Update
Posted by Dan on October 14th, 2005

For some reason the service won't install the updates in the background and
when I check the site it has 8 updates. What's going on?

Posted by PA Bear on October 14th, 2005

Absent any errors from your Windowsupdate.log, I'll suggest that, like many
around the world, you're seeing extreme delays caused by excessive demand on
the servers. We saw similar behavior in August when six (6) patches were
released and now there are nine (9), two or 3 of them for all OSS, Win98
through Win2K03.

Be patient: If Automatic Updates doesn't bring 'em in by, say, 17 Oct-05
(Monday), post back.

Or you can try downloading/installing 'em via Windows/Microsoft Update page
(and for best results, try it during off-peak hours, e.g., 11:00 PM-7:00AM
PDT). Understand that by doing so, you're pushing all the Automatic Updates
users further back in the queue (which may explain, at least in part, why
you've not gotten them yet).

Learn not to depend on technology that is bound to fail, to get your OS
patched. Things like Windows, Microsoft, and Automatic Update add some
useless and unnecessary code that is as error-filled as the rest of MS's
code.

For more on using Common Sense Computing see:

Will Automatic Updates work with the Windows Genuine Advantage?

Supposedly you can get updates through AU without validating, but as
with everything MS, there are times when its code doesn't act like it is
supposed to.

So, what should I do with AU? Use it as a signal to manually download the
updates when the icon appears?

I wouldn't trust it to tell me the time, let alone when updates are
available. I subscribe to the Windows Security newsletter, but for the
most part, MS releases the patches every second Tuesday of the month.

I checked the Windows Update log and the text is below. It says the update is
not required. Since the updates are released every second tuesday of the
month, should I turn off AU and how do I notify myself when to check for
updates?
To PA Bear, Is there a time good between 4pm and 9pm?

Sign up for MS's security bulletin newsletter, and turn off the flawed
AU.
