- Backup Utility - Missing Job Capability
- Posted by Alex on October 2nd, 2005
I have Windows XP Home and have installed the Backup Utility from the
installation CD, but the program works differently from the 98 version that I
had used previously. It doesn't remember (by creating a job), the files that
I want to backup so I have to reselect them each time that I perform a
backup. Is this a deleted feature or am I missing something?

The files you wish to back up are saved in the job that you
create. When running ntbackup next time, simply open this
job file.

Thanks Pegasus, but my version isn't working that way. When I select the
..bkf file name from the previous backup and select "Start Backup", I get an
error message "No files are selected. Please select some files, and then try
again."

Save your selection again, then use notepad.exe to examine
the contents of the .bkf file you just saved. It's an ordinary
text file in Unicode format.

I did what you said using notepad. The file is roughly 35 mb. It looks like
a binary file to me. But assuming it is a ordinary text file, how do I get
the Backup Utility to accept it as its source of backup information?

Your selections are saved in a .bks file, not bkf (my typo!).
When you click Save As it actually says so on the screen.

Thanks a bunch Pegasus - I get it now. I was confused between the .bkf and
..bks files and overlooked the Load Selection & Save Selection options under
the Job menu heading. You saved me from having to buy a separate backup
application.

You're looking at the .bkf, you should be looking at the .bks.
