Also try the free Beta version of Microsoft Antispyware from
http://download.microsost.com
It is consistently rated among the best in independent reviews of
antispyware products.
Good luck

Kristi,
I agree with Ron's recommendation; however, the correct link is
http://download.microsoft.com/ . The Microsoft program serves as a spyware
blocker [you won't need Spyware Blaster] as well as a system scanner and
removal tool. It also monitors programs which attempt to add themselves to
your Start Menu, attempts to add items to Internet Explorers Favorites, etc.
You are given the opportunity to block or accept each one.

Why?
The MS Antispyware Beta has been in the top two or three products in
every recent comparative review of antispyware products.

Hi all and thanks again. Yeah, I caught the misspelling, but thanks.
What I did was run AdAware first a few times. While running it, Avast
caught 3 "viruses" in //local/temp.... AdAware found a couple of
objectional cookies and some minor doc history stuff, all of which I
removed.
I tried to install Spybot S&D (I had used that and adaware a lot before),
but it had an insurmountable prob downloading it's updates - I bet the site
was down briefly. I seem to recall that it never could do an update on an
install - always later. But it would catch a couple things that adaware
didn't. We're talking a year ago here. (Been doing Linux)
I installed and ran the MS beta prog - it found nothing. I tried to set it
so that it wouldn't start on boot, but it insisted on uninstalling itself
in the taskbar, so I eventually uninstalled it. (this was also due to me
thinking that it was causing some "excluded" stuff to appear on PD)(it was
really Norton recycle bin which I forget about when I install Ghost) I use
firefox so the alexa thing is not of concern. I may well go back and try
it again, since I am current with updates. By the way, what is this new
validation thing that it does after a certain level in MS Update - somebody
hack updates???
) I'm legal, so all works well - just curious!

Ron, I put the MS beta back up tonight and will leave it up. It does not
seem to scan anything other than the C:\ partition. Any way to make it
scan all partitions in my system?

I've been running Linux betas for the past year with little prob. XPRC1
and 2 were great. It'a the alphas that I find a tad risky.
))) Betas
are usually fine! So far, MS AntiSpyware has caused me no probs. It's also
very interesting to me to see if MS catches something that AdAware doesn't.
Besides, I back up my system with Ghost so if something untoward happens, I
lose very little.

Well, isn't life wonderful? It's your computer; install whatever you want. I
thought that Linux didn't get spyware, etc. I don't even install final
versions until I see what happens to others, much less betas and, you
guessed it, it's my computer and I will install or not install whatever I
want. Fair enough?

I wouldn't get hung up on teh name, if I were you.
Pretty much software is beta these days, unfortunately. At least in
the case of the Antisypware, Microsoft labeled it honestly. :-)
