Would someone please recommend the best free Windows XP Compatible DVD Player Software
(yes I have a DVD drive).

I don't think you'll find any free DVD player - the codec required to play
DVDs is licensed and any software using it to play DVDs must also be
licensed - therefore paid for.

maybe VLC it seems to play anything

The dvd drive then should have come with dvd player/decoder software (Such
as PowerDVD).
