Just bought one, model 6L120P0 (12o gb ATA133) and installed in my
Windows XP sp2 and it sounded like a train that has seen better days.

Since the shop won't accept returns and I can't claim on the warranty
I just dumped it in the trash bin.

which give you rights. The shop should have taken it back. So you had at

It doesn't sound like a problem with Maxtor to me. Any company that produces
mass quantities of anything is bound to have a some that slip through even
the best quality control. On the other hand the shop you bought it from
would be a problem in my opinion since they will not accept returns.

Sounds like a merchandise problem that the buyer didn't want to pursue. All
hard drive manufacturers have both bad batches and isolated bad drives
within good batches.
Is there some reason the merchant won't take the hard drive as a return?
For instance was that posted as policy as no returns at time of sale?

Have very loud scsi drive that's about 5 years old now, and still "chuggin
away".
