Blank Device Manager
Posted by midwest_steve on October 15th, 2005

When looking at my Device Manager in XP no devices are displayed. Same
situation when I look at Network Connections - nothing is listed there
either. This happens in Normal Mode and Safe Mode.

In doing some searching I've found references to a solution at
http://www.softwaretipsandtricks.com...ad.php?t=15653 that almost
did the trick. But when I click on the Advanced tab and check the two boxes
at the bottom of the screen I received a message "Registry editor could not
set security in the key currently selected or some of its subkeys."

I've tried making this change in Safe Mode, but no luck.

One other thing of interest - in the Services.msc the choices of Start,
Stop, Pause, etc. for Plug and Play are greyed out. Maybe this is normal,
but it seems odd.

Any other ideas? Strange thing is the PC behaves just fine otherwise. But
I know the next time I need to get in to Device Manager or Network
Connections that I'll be hosed.

Thanks,

Steve

Start the Plug and Play service.

Open Services...
Start | Run | Type: services.msc | Click OK |
Scroll down to and double click Plug and Play |
Set Startup type to Automatic | Click Apply | Click the
Start button | When started, close Services

No Items Appear in the Device Manager List When You Open It

Thanks - that's started by default. I've started and stopped it, but no luck.

Finally restored a backup from a week ago, which didn't have this problem.
So while I'm back to business, I'm not sure what the failure was or how to
resolve it. Thanks to you guys for your tips though.
