- Boot directly into Application?
- Posted by Rebecca on November 10th, 2005
Hi There,
I have a user who needs his computer to boot directly into a running
application. The OS is WinXP, of course, SP2. Specifically, when the
machine is turned on, he wants it to be completely black until an exe file
launches. He doesn't want to see any of the boot screens, no Bios
screen...no Welcome screen or desktop. Just black until this exe file runs.
(Which starts a media type file, btw.) (Like turning on a TV.)
So, I went into the BIOS and the option was there to either not show the
BIOS Maker logo but have the standard initial BIOS screen or vice versa, so I
have it vice versa, but want to know if there is a way to have it not even
show the Maker's screen. Then, I have selected the "noguiboot" option so
that the remainder of the boot remains black until the blue Windows Welcome
screen appears. (One user account, so the Welcome screen just shows briefly
and then goes to the desktop.) Then, I put the exe file in the startup
folder, so that the desktop loads briefly and then the exe file runs.
So - at this point, I still need to get rid of -
1.) The BIOS Makers Screen
2.) The blue Welcome screen and
3.) The brief desktop loading from being shown.
Is this in any way possible?!?!?! Thank you.

Thanks. I didn't think so. However, I will wait until I get a second "No"
(No offense)...just to be sure. (I've had an MVP be wrong before...again,
not you!) So, people out there...what say you? :-)

No - I think you misunderstand. It's not that he can't see the bootup
screen. It's that he doesn't want to see the bootup screen. The reason is -
we are trying to have a computer act like a tv for a client
presentation...why having the clients know it's a computer and not a TV is a
problem...I don't know...but, that's what they want.

Maybe it's one of those - "Why do you want to do that" type of
situations. When I read one of these postings, it's really hard to
visualize why a situation like that is needed. My thinking would
be to just leave the application running and hibernate the PC.As
power is re-applied the application is still there. I suppose you
could go to great expense & effort and maybe achieve the results
you seek. I'd have to have a lot more details and specifications
before trying to Engineer a solution.

Maybe the answer is to NOT HAVE a monitor, but only a TV attached to the
s-video out. That why there is nothing on the TV until the application
fires off and the signal is directed to the TV.

LOL! You need to read more of his posts then. He's the most off-the-mark

Why not leave the monitor off until the app loads?

Well, yes, ideally, they could just have the exe running and whenever they
needed it, it would be there. This is only for if either there's a power
outage or for some other reason the computer gets turned off during the
presentation and has to be restarted. I try to tell them, it's like getitng
your car to fly - with unlimited funds and time, it could happen, but right
now, the technology just isn't there. They don't believe me... :-(

It's possible to suppress some of the BIOS displays on some model
motherboards but not all. However, there's definitely no way to launch
an application *before* the OS loads. What your user wants is not
possible, using a Windows-based computer.
If the application in question is a DOS application, you can get fairly
close to what your user wants, provided you can find a version of
MS-DOS, and a computer old enough to support it.
