- Which browser to use
- Posted by Kramer on October 14th, 2005
I use WinXP and IE. I have had IE since the beginning of time.
However, recently I have read that Netscape is better.
Questions: Any opinions which is best?
Question: Can I operate both of them withouit complications?
Thanks,
Bill

Complications ? - I use Internet Explorer and Opera and the two
of them behave very well together. The most common issue with
having multiple browser is which one becomes the default on the
system.

Netscape 8 combines both FireFox an IE base engines.
I have ran:
FireFox
Netscape
Opera
IE
(plus others...)
without problems.
FireFox 1.0.7 "appears" to be secure for now.
Netscape 8.0 has a bug which affects IE. Fixed in 8.02 (or greater.)
Opera 8.5 (now free) may still have style issues compatibility like in 8.0.
Some pages that appeared to work correctly with IE needed "tweaking" within
Opera's style settings.
IE is still the most widely attacked browser. As long as you have SP2
installed, you have a built-in pop-up blocker.
Now, both Microsoft and Mozilla are working on new browsers. IE 7 is
"supposed" to be getting most of the additional feature that FireFox has
now. FireFox 1.5 is supposed to be better. Both are Beta, or pre-betas,
software.
NOTE: As with everything, a browser is only as good as the complete
"security" of your PC. Always run:
-- A firewall
-- An up to date anti-virus and keep is up to date
-- Pop-up blockers (built-in or add on)
-- Anti-spyware utilities
-- A backup system to keep your files safe (with a copy on the PC.)
-- Updates for Windows XP.

Firefox is superior to both of those. Netscape is owned by AOL and IE is
owned by Microsoft. Should be a no brainer. I only use IE for Windows
Updates.

Purely a matter of taste. I use Firefox, myself.

Certainly.

Better than what?
Some say the MAC is better than the PC, but they have a very small sliver of
the market...
I have used Internet Exploder, Netscrape, Frierfox and Oprah.
(Misspellings show my 'deep respect & loyalty' for all the browsers
mentioned)
None seem to be better overall then another, IMHO.
No software is perfect. It's whatever you prefer.

Netscape is a brand name for the Mozilla suite, which includes a
browser, mail/news program, and more. Netscape shares a code base
with Mozilla but is usually one or two revisions behind.
Firefox shares some code base with Mozilla, with two main
differences: Firefox is _only_ a browser, not a mail or news program;
and Firefox's user interface is rather different from Mozilla's (and
gives the user less control). Firefox will continue to be developed
in the future, but Mozilla will not.
> Questions: Any opinions which is best?
Yes, and all you'll get are opinions because this is not an objective
question but a question of preference. Most people think MSIE is more
risky than Firefox/Mozilla/Netscape (or indeed any other browser)
because of MSIE's ActiveX controls; but a lot of people defend MSIE.
Best advice: download Firefox (newer and smaller than Netscape) and
try it for a while. If you don't like it you can always uninstall it.
> Question: Can I operate both of them withouit complications?
Yes.
Note that MSIE must be on your machine for Windows updates, even if
it's not your default browser.
