- Buffalo Wireless Network Sucks
- Posted by Skavenger on November 4th, 2005
Well I tried again and this time I'm convinced.........it sucks..........
I'm reffering to wirless networking using Buffalo wireless adaptors.
I am running Windows XP Pro on two machines with Zone Alarm and Norton AV,
Windows Firewall is switched off.
The problem I have is I can play around Ping each PC's own adaptor play
around some more and ping the other machine, hell with a bit more playing
around I can actually access folders over the network, then hey presto turn
your back for a second and the network has fallen over...........
I have noticed that on my main PC in Windows Explorer Folders My Network
Places/Entire Network is missing, what have I disabled?
I have been trying to set up ICS over the Wireless Network through a BT105
USB DSL Modem on the main PC.....forget it, got everything talking to
eachother had to mannually fix the IP of the Host to 192.168.0.1 and the IP
of the Laptop to 192.168.0.5 but could not for the life of me get an
Internet Gateway established on the Laptop.
I know ICS is a pain and I should just fork out for a Wireless DSL
Modem/Router but hey come its a challenge

For ICS to work the host (with modem attached) must have ip address
192.168.0.1 the client must have dynamic ip address.
I have found frequently that Ad-hoc wireless networks are unreliable, but
thats not an answer to your question

Some versions of ZoneAlarm are incompatible with Internet Connection
Sharing. Try switching the Windows Firewall on and un-installing (not
just disabling) ZoneAlarm on the main PC.

This web site should help:
Making the Wireless Home Network Connection in Windows XP Without a
Router
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/u...02april08.mspx
>For ICS to work the host (with modem attached) must have ip address
>192.168.0.1 the client must have dynamic ip address.
The client can have a static IP address. If you assign one, make all
of these settings:
IP Address: 192.168.0.x (1<x<255)
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1
DNS Server = 192.168.0.1 or your ISP's DNS server
>I have found frequently that Ad-hoc wireless networks are unreliable, but
>thats not an answer to your question
I agree -- XP's support for Ad-hoc wireless networking isn't very
good.

I have found out that try as you may you won't get ICS working with the free
version of Zone Alarm, the Pro Version will work but requires some tweaking.
I was using Zone Alarm as I seem to remember being advised to switch off
Windows Firewall in favour of a Third Party product.
Looks like I'll have to opt for:
1. Stick to Widows Firewall
2. Paying for Zone Alarm Pro.
3. Buy a DSL Modem/Router.
4. Give up!!!!
