Sounds like a third party issue.. To be honest my method of troubleshooting
this would be:

1) Ghost/Image system..
2) Do a fast unattended installation of XP with all current patches.
3) Install the application giving me the trouble - see if it STILL gives the
same trouble.

This will prove if there is something wrong with the application and Windows
XP in general - contact the makers of said application. Or if there is
something wrong with the application and something I have installed over the
time the original installation has been in place and that application.

I could then restore my machine (using the image I made) back tot he point
it was at for further troubleshooting.

way..

If you resolved this same trouble by reinstalling Windows XP 5 months ago -
then it is *not* the OS.
Think about it.

You reinstalled the same OS that was giving you trouble with said
application. I am assuming you even patched that OS. You installed the
application again and it did not give you trouble. So you continued on and
started installing everything else.

If you were able to fix your problem by reinstalling the same OS and same
application - then the problem does not lie with either of those things -
but with something you did AFTER you installed those two things in the last
5 months.
