Can I get a virus just looking on a virus invested HD
Posted by PeterM on September 25th, 2005

I just connected a external HD via a USB port onto my computer, Norton
immediately advised me of several Trojans and other bad items. I counted at
least 30 nasty things. By me just looking at this hard drive, and checking
the HD for viruses, deleting them and quarantine them., can I catch any
viruses? I did a check on my computer, but I didn't find anything. I do run
Zone Alarm Pro.............Many thanks in advance...............Peter

You may have been infected if you hadn't have had an Antivirus software -
yes.

No - not if you didn't run and programs or open any files ( assuming also
that there was no autorun program launched on plugging the drive in).

Thanks Shenan and GTS, I feel a little better now. I simply just looked at
the files, and yes, I am glad that my virus program alerted
me..............Peter

I suggest you perform a complete "On Demand" scan of that entire drive, of all files types,
and make sure that any option described similarily as "scan archive files" is enabled.

Your AV prog only warned you of nasties that are in the defs. If your
defs weren't up-to date or missing a nasty that was on the drive, then
you could very well have gotten screwed.
