- Can I Reinstall XP From Upgrade CD?
- Posted by Ken H on November 1st, 2005
I upgraded the operating system on my Gateway PC from Windows 95 to Windows
XP. I would like to clear the hard drive of junk by reformatting it then
reinstalling the operating system. Can I reinstall the XP operating system
on the hard drive with my XP upgrade CD? Are there other/better options to
accomplish my objective?

U can try to reformat the hdd but when u try to reformat using an upgrade CD
it will ask you for a previous OS CD, u can try putting the windows 95 CD at
that time but the recommended one is windows 98 or ME...make sure that u
change the first boot device as CD Drive from the BIOS and boot from the CD

You will need a Windows 95 CD or disks to insert for qualifier when asked
during setup.
Technically you could not have upgraded your 95 system to XP, because it is
not allowed. You would have done a clean install using the 95 CD as the
qualifier just as you will need to do now.
I hope you have upgraded the computer hardware from it's original
configuration.
Make sure you download all updates and drivers before attempting the clean
install. Follow the tips and step by step in the link below.
You boot from the CD and do a clean install.

That's referred to as a "clean install". Other than providing the previous
OS install CD as proof of qualification, you may have to consider any
drivers that XP does not have in its installation.

I stand corrected on the version of Windows I upgraded from--it was Windows
98 not 95. Thanks to all responders for the information.
