- Can I use Windows to partition new drive?
- Posted by Walter R. on October 10th, 2005
I bought a new 80 GB hard drive for use as a backup on my own computer.
I know that windows can format a new drive. Can windows partition a new
drive into 3 partitions??
How would I go about it?
Thanks

I saw this and found it an intersting question. I looked in the path
outlined. My pc (HP) seems to be layed out differently.
I went Start > All Progs. > PC Help & Tools. I found No Disk Mgr.
I also went to Help, and keyed in Disk Mgr. I came up w/11 items listed. But
none describe the operation in question.
Is there another way to find this utility?

OEM Manufacturers often customize the Help and Support menu options,
but I believe what Shehan meant was for one to open Help and Support,
and then search for "Disk Manager."
To go directly to the utility, right-click My Computer > Manage > Disk
Management.

"I know that windows can format a new drive. Can windows partition a
new drive into 3 partitions??"
Yes
"How would I go about it?"
Start > Run "diskmgmt.msc"
You can probably work the rest out.

The only thing is that XP will not allow you to change any existing
partitions. To do this, you need a utility like Partition Magic.

XP will not allow you to change the partition that XP is installed on.
That is not the same as saying XP will not allow you to change any existing
partitions.
