- Can not open saved Microsoft word documuments

I have Microsoft word 2000. The documents I have saved
in the past will not open. I finally get this message after waiting
about 5 minutes: XXXXX.doc is locked for editing by (my name).
Click 'Notify' to open a read-only copy of the document and receive
notification when the document is no longer in use.
Any help someone can offer would be appreciated.
