- can not start windows because following file is corrupt or missing

i don't know where else to post this so here i am looking for help. thanks
in advance for any assistance.
i removed a newgroup reader that had some "bundled" software because i noted
degraded system performance and unwarranted network activity after the news
reader was installed.
on reboot, after intinail boot post i get the messege "windows could not
start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
\windows\system32\config\system you can attempt to repair this file by
starting windows setup using the original setup CD-ROM. select 'r' at the
first screen to start repair."
the repair console is unfamiliar territory to me but what the heck; in i
went. there are all kinds of command options so i tried "best guess" and
selected "bootcfg /rebuild" since it seemed to me to be a config issue. when
i triggered the bootcfg /rebuild command it started to scan. it was not able
to complete the scan and suggest i run chkdsk. i ran chkdsk and chkdsk /p
with no errors or issues coming up.
should i have tried bootfix or something else?
i have six partitions set up (using partition magic) on the hard drive.
do i need to do a repair installation of winXP pro?
i am open to suggestions. thanks again for your help.

Some of your system files are corrupt or mssing. No configuration problem.
Why don't people read the error messages?
Either do a repair install of Windows (not the recovery console), or, if you
have a back up it is usually sufficient to restore the \windows\system32
directory.
With the repair install, boot from the CD and proceed to install windows.
Don't choose recovery console, but choose the partition you wish to install
windows on. Make sure it is the same one windows is currently installed on.
Setup will check the disk and you will see a message that reads something
like, "setup has detected windows on this drive, do you want to repair it",
choose yes and setup will re-install windows over your current installation.
This will not delete any of you user files and IIRC your profiles will be
intact, though you will probably need to install your programs again to
register them in the registry.

i will admit an "uneducated" reading of the ....\system32\config.... is what
lead me to think it was a confiuration issue.
and, i get it back up and running i will at least ghost that partition.
looks like it is a repair install so far.
