Can someone 'splain Google.Groups?

Hi, Maybe this is how it should work but it sure is different from how
it USED to work, and it's confusing!

I can bring up and read any post. But if I try to REPLY to a post, or
Start a New Topic, I have to SIGN IN.

When finished I cannot go back and read posts until I SIGN OUT!

There's something illogical about the way this is set up.Seems to me
that I should SIGN IN, perform any function, and then SIGN OUT?

Thankx....I couldn't get much help from anywhere else. Mike

Why don't you use a newsreader rather than a web interface.

GoogleGroups is a good way to search the newsgroups. It's a poor
way to actively participate and post to them. Do yourself a favor
and switch to a newsreader, such as Outlook Express, which comes
with Windows.

Thanks, d-d, Are there any free newsreaders? I'm retired and on a
minimum fixed income. and everything is going up in price these days!

program.

When you return to the prior page, you are probably still seeing the cached
copy. Hit the Refresh button to reload the page. Also, NNTP is not an
instantaneous prattle protocol. It takes time for a post to show up even if
you are looking for the new post on the same server when you submitted it.
In fact, it used to take up to 4 hours for new posts to appear but, I think,
this got reduced to 2 hours.

Of course, maybe you are not asking about the Usenet groups that are copied
in Google Groups but instead are asking about the "private" groups that only
the Google server carries.

To add to the litany of responses that say use a newsreader, XP comes
with one, Outlook Express. Here's a tutorial on how to set it up for
newsgroups: http://michaelstevenstech.com/outloo...snewreader.htm

Outlook Express is not perfect but it
works fine for me (and has been doing
so for years), especially when compared
to web interface offerings. It's like
driving a Oldsmobile. It may not be the
coolest thing around but it gets you there.

Best of all, Outlook Express is free...
well, it's built into XP.

Sure. You may want to use "Outlook Express" (coming with Windows anyway)
however, I personally prefer third-party newsreaders like "Forté Agent"
or the newsreader being installed with the "Netscape" Communicator. All
of them are free of charge and there are many more of them.

Same here........Super Gravity. :0)

It came on some silly disk I had yeeeeears ago when I had my first
computer (now I have 7) and it's the simplist......I only use it for
text messaging though......I do the binary route BIG time but I use
GrabIt, or PowerGrab for that......S.Gravity does support Yenc though
BTW.....

I love the fact that a good registry backup & an updated "newsdb" folder
backup works wonders when ya have to do a clean install.....Pain in the
ass to redo all the settings........

Surprised to see no one has mentioned Firefox, which has newsreader
capabilities. XNews is great for binaries, but it takes some effort to
figure the program out initially.

Hi Francis,

I use Outlook Express because it came with the operating system. I know
other readers have their favorite newsreader programs.

I do like to use Google Groups every once in awhile. Join the group.
You are not required to give too much information to join. Once you
have joined Google Groups becomes easier to use.

I do like to use Google Groups to look up posts in the past and to see
if a question I have has already been addressed and answered.

That is just the way I use and read newsgroups. Outlook Express because
it came with the operating system for everyday reading of newsgroups.
And, Google Groups, when I want to look up information that has already
been dealt with. I am using Google Groups to answer your post.

Rick, you might want to add OE Quotefix to that page. OE out-of-the-
box seems to screw up quotes from previous articles, by reformatting
the lines and not putting the right number of ">" at the start of the
continuation lines.

I tried Forte Agent this year. Both 2.0 and 3.0 lack a usable kill
file, and the marking of watched threads isn't reliable either. I
don't download binaries, but people reported lots of troubles with
that feature in 3.0. Oh yes, crosspost management didn't work for me.

I came back to free Gravity.

That was added in 2.6 <http://gravity.tbates.org/supergrav.html>, and
I used it. I haven't used t in 2.7, but it's there
