Cannot Access Safe Mode
Posted by The Buckster on October 27th, 2005

Have tried to access Safe Mode using both the F8 key during start-up and the
system configuration utility method (ie, run MSCONFIG etc.). In both cases I
get a screen that is completely black except for the words Safe Mode in white
letters in each of the four corners - but no icons and nowhere to go except
to shut-down the computer. Please help with any ideas as to how to fix this
problem so I can access Safe Mode (which I am trying to do in order to run
some files that are intended to run some sysclean files). Thanks.

Well it seems you are in safe mode, but have lost some important files
that load the desktop icons and desktop information. What caused this
problem to begin with? Is your hard drive developing bad sectors?

In safe-mode no icons exist, only a black screen with text,as youve seen,
are you sure youre not in "safe-mode"...What is sysclean, sounds like some
3rd party junk you shouldnt run anyway...

Speaking of Trend Micro, they've updated their on-line Spyware Scan
tool. Better yet, it will "Actually" clean infected items for free. I've
used
it several times on customer PCs and it's found and removed a few
"Baddies" that others missed.

Could you please provide a bit more insight as to possible bad sectors on the
hard drive and which of the various programs on www.bootdisk.com might
address the problem? Does this involve a reinstall of my XP Home o/s? Would
any of the utility programs locted under Programs/Accessories/Sysytem Tools
address this possible problem? Thanks.

As noted below, the sysclean files I refer to were provided to me by Trend
Micro to help eliminate possible viruses, etc.
