Cannot Clear This
Posted by Wayne Wengert on April 26th, 2006

I run Win XP/SP2 with all current updates and I have anti-virus and spyware
protection. A month or so ago I started having a weird condition that
startys if I am away from the computer for a while, when I come back I have
to click on my logon ID but then - sometimes - any mouse activity acts like
I am holding down the shift key. If I left click on something, it extends
the selection to that point instead of selecting it?

Also, Alt/Ctl/Del no longer works and if I click on Start/Turn Off
Computer/Restart, it does nothing. All programs appear to be functioning OK
and there is little or no HDD activity. I've run virus scans several time
with no problems reported.

To turn of the computer I have to press and hold the power button. After a
restart - all is fine.

ny thoughts on what might be causing this?

Have you considered "trying" a different keyboard? You might have something
"caught" underneath it or it could be starting to "fail?"

As for anti-spyware, you need to be aware that not every anti-spyware utility
"catches" every possible spyware program. You need to actively scan with
multiple different anti-spyware utilities in order to make sure that all
possible "infestations" can be cleared out.

Several known "good" free anti-spyware removal tools:

AD Aware SE
Spybot: Search and Destroy

Windows Defender Beta 2 (Microsoft's attempt to remove spyware. Should not be
your only utility for spyware removal)

Hijackthis (look for a web forum for help. This is not a "beginner's"
anti-spyware utility. This "yanks" the spyware out forcefully.)

TrendMicro's Housecall web scanner (checks for viruses and spywares.)

the setting like an usual shutdown, holding down the button should be
fine. But if it shut down immediately, you got a problem.
My friend, Siddi, shut down his laptop for few weeks by holding down the
power button and then his computer shut down always direct. Few weeks
later, BOOM. He was NEVER able to boot Windows, he got a blue screen for
1ms and restart and he couldn't do ANYTHING to fix this.
The one thing that was left to do was:
1. Tell his father what happened (not a good thing if he is the owner
too :P )
2. Format the PC and set it up again.

But about that mouse activity and ctrl-alt-del.. I have absolutely NO
idea what is wrong , so I can't help you with that problem.

Thanks for the responses. I did try another keyboard but that had no effect.
The fact that it only happens after the system has been in "screen saver"
mode seems to be the one consistent fact. I'll keep looking.

Have you used a second anti-virus and a second anti-spyware program as a
double check? As no anti-anything gets them all.
