Cannot Connect to Internet
Posted by Watel on February 27th, 2006

I cannot connect to the Internet with any browser (Firefox and IE) and with
any program that is supposed to connect (Updaters and games).

I have XP Pro SP2, and have Road Runner cable broadband service (external
cable modem).

At one point, only Firefox would connect but no Windows programs. Now,
nothing will connect except when booted in Safe Mode with Networking (which
would load a few pages then stall completely and "time out".)

Road Runner techs say that the signal is strong with no "packet loss".
Since I can connect in Safe Mode, I assume that this is a software issue, not
a hardware issue. As a matter of fact, I'm typing this issue on our wireless
notebook using the same router as my currently "unconnected" desk top.

I have tried a couple of Winsock utility repair programs with no success.

Please help me, I knocking my head against the desk.

Thanks.

I tried Desk Top Doctor (it's the same as RoadRunner's Medic) to no avail. I
followed systematically Malke's solution. I didn't have any viruses or
malware.

Again, I can connect in "Safe Mode with Networking" but not in Normal mode.

Please, if anyone has a different solution, let me know.

Thanks.

Since you can connect in Safe Mode with Networking but not in Regular
Mode, you know the hardware is OK. You also know that something that is
running in Regular Mode is interfering with the networking. To find out
what it is, do clean-boot troubleshooting to determine the problem
child.

Thanks, Malke.

The clean boot helped...looked like a ZoneAlarm issue with Microsoft
Security Suite.

Again, Thanks!!
