Cannot connect through IE
Posted by phal on September 24th, 2005

I am having problems on my laptop. A Dell Inspiron 6000 1.4 40 gb HD XP Home
plugged into a linksys router on a broadband connection.
All other computers on the network having no problems.
I can connect using peer to peer programs, and when I open Internet Explorer
I have no problem with opening my home page (Google) or getting search
results. But when I try to open a search I can only connect to one of every
ten or so sites I try. I have checked my IE properties and set everything
back to default settings with no luck. I have checked sites that will not
come up on the laptop and they do come up on my desktop.
I have disabled the XP firewall.
I am stumped. Any help is appreciated...thanks...gary

I have also cleared all cookies, offline web content, and history in internet
properties .

Since you have been using peer-to-peer file-sharing programs, do the
normal troubleshooting for malware:

I ran Trends Sysclean and it found no problems.
I ran Ad Aware and Spybot. Spybot found 3 minors and AA found nothing.
I cannot connect except to browser home page and very very few random
websites.
I have been switching between a broadband router connection and a wireless
connection, could I have setting problems there?
Thanks...gary

You might be having problems with the DNS servers that your internet
connection is configured for. I had a similar problem when my provider was
having "issues". Go
into Start->Control Panel->Network And Internet Connections->Network
Connections. Right click on the connection that you are using and select
Properties. Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click Properties. DNS
Server Automatically/Manual setting are the ones you want to play with. If
Auto is not selected, try it to see if it fixes things. If it is set, try
googling for a better local DNS to set the manual setting to. I know that
4.2.2.1 works pretty well. Hope this helps.
