- Cannot delete file: Cannot read from the source file or disk
- Posted by Sue on January 2nd, 2006
My daughter created a folder on the desktop. It's empty and I cannot delete
it. I cannot delete it or even change the name of the folder. Please help.
How can I delete this empty folder from my desktop. Every time I attempt to
drag it to the trash or right click it and chose delete I get the following
error message:
Cannot delete file: Cannot read from the source file or disk.
Thank you,
Sue

It's possible that some element of windows may still be using/accessing the
folder. Try shutting down any or all programs that might possibly be using
it, or have recently used it, even Explorer, if you have it open.
Otherwise, I've found that sometimes the only way to get rid of a pesky
folder that refuses to delete is to wait until I restart the computer, then
try again. Sometimes, there are times I've deleted a folder, and windows
registers it as deleted, but yet it still shows up on screen for some reason,
so if I try to delete it again, naturally windows can't "find it". Perhaps
just refreshing your display might help, or perhaps trying to delete it from
within Windows Explorer itself (Navigate the tree to your Desktop Folder), or
as I've mentioned, restarting your computer, then coming back and trying to
delete it if it is still there. If this fails, and it still remains
stubborn, one last way I might recommend is to check for such a program which
can force delete stubborn files/folders. Check out www.download.com and do a
search.

I just realized something about this folder on my desktop that will not
delete. It has NO NAME! My daughter forget to give it a name. I tried to
name it by clicking rename but it will not allow me to give it a name. Is
this the problem? Because when I tried to rename it I got a similar error
message:
Cannot rename folder: Cannot read from the source file or disk. And when I
click properties it does not show the created, access, or modiefied dates.
They are blank. Plus the tabs at the top of property window only show three
tabs. General Sharing and Customize. No Advanced tab.

Just check whether Archive Attribute, in Folder Properties, is enabled.
If so, just disable it & try to rename or delete the folder. If it
works, guess the reason or I will explain u the reason.

It would not allow me to uncheck the archive attribute. When I uncheck and
close it . . . then reopen, the proterties is re-checked again. It will not
allow me to uncheck. After I uncheck it rechecks it.
