Cannot initialise device driver (code 37)
Posted by sambaboy on October 29th, 2005

My pc has lost it's DVD/CD-writer drive. The device is listed in device
manager window with an exclamation mark next to it. When I view the
properties it gives me the message 'windows cannot initialise the device
driver for this hardware (code 37).
I have tried uninstalling the device and rebooting several times. Each time
xp tells me it has found new hardware but I still have no access to this
drive.
Any suggestions?

What about the status of the controller serving the device ? I'm assuming
it's probably on the Secondary IDE channel. Removing and Reinstalling
has probably built up a number of instances in the Registry for the device.
I would check the Driver (TAB), Driver Details button on the DVD and
see which drivers are being used - any 3rd-party or non-Microsoft will
be listed in this table (Left Click each one and then examine the Provider
information shown below).

Have you added or changed any "Burning" software on the PC ?

Boot with a dos bootdisk and see if finds the cdrom drive, then see if
you can read the files on the cd, then see if you can open up a .txt
file or whatever on the cd to tell if you have a windows problem or a
hardware problem.

Dear S. Sengupta

Many thanks for taking the time to reply to my question.

The Kellys-Korner fix has sorted the problem and I am now happily playing my
CDs again!

Thanks again.
