cannot recognize external hard drive anymore
Posted by scottfmd on May 19th, 2008

I have been using an Iomega External Firewire hard drive for many years
without problem. Recently I had to reinstall my operating system due to a
wireless networking problem. Now that my XP is up and running again, the
computer does not recognize the drive. It comes up on the "my computer"
window as just a generic "local disk" with a drive letter, rather than the
IOMEGA HDD icon like it used to. When I right click properties, it shows the
free and used space on the drive that reflects the files I have saved on it;
however I cannot access the files by clicking on the drive. The device is
listed on the "device manager" properly as the Iomega External hard Drive.
How do I get the computer to recognize the drive like it used to? There is
no driver software required and I did not make any changes to the drive. In
fact, it was not connected while I was restoring the OS.

Which all leads to the fact that you did not install the fancy Iomega
software that originally came with thre external drive. ;-)

For the Iomega icons, there should have been an Iomega utility cdrom
or diskette that accompanied the drive. Or there is an *.ico file on
the hard drive itself, this containing the icon for the Iomega drive.
But if the drive is functioning properly without its icon present, then
leave it alone.
