I cannot unite two partitions by Partition Magic. First partition is the
system disk. Second is an empty logical disk, being at once behind the
first. (All of them are FAT32 file system.)

I tried to use Partition Magic from a boot diskette. The process begins, and
then there is a message about the spoiled sectors, then once again. As a
result all remains in an old fashion.

And here the CHKDSK utility does not find out mistakes neither on the first,
nor on the second disks.

I tried to make the same by Norton PartitionMagic 8 (installed on a hard),
and has received the same result.

In what can be a problem?

This is not an XP problem, but have you tried deleting the empty partition
and then you should be able to resize the partition to any size you want.
Check the Partition Magic support pages if this doesn't help.

You must unallocate the space, if you havn't already done so. If it is still
a partition readable by windows, then you must delete the partition first
then resize the original C partition to include the NOW unallocated space. I

Check to see if there are genuinely any bad sectors with a program from the
HD manufacturer's website.

Combining partitions should be avoided.
First step. Delete the logical partition, then the extended partition it
resides in. This will turn into unallocated space.
Second step. Enlarge the system partition incorporating the unallocated
space.

I hope you have made a backup of any critical data. Partition work is
inherently dangerous, and error messages are screaming a warning at you. Bad
things can and do happen.

Are you trying to merge the two partitions? Or are you trying to expand the
system partition and take the unused space in the second one? Are they both
primaries? Or is the secondary a logical volume within an extended one?

I would agree about the "Merging", never had much success doing
it with PQMagic (8.01, from a Bootable CD-R). If needed and the
space is available, I'll copy content from the secondary partition to
the 1st (To be expanded) in a folder, like Drive-F. Then remove
all the extended/primary partitions to leave Unallocated space. Also,
on PQMagic sessions where a number of operations are done, I
do one or two and reboot before finishing. Finally, whenever you
use PQMagic (DOS-mode) ALWAYS do a "Check for Errors"
on the partitions you'll be working with. Watch out for "Improperly
Dismounted" or for that matter any errors. Partition work always is
potentially dangerous - so don't try it without backups & Images.
