i downloaded the driver for my printer and i started to install it and in the
middle a message came up saying "The software you are installing for this
hardware: Printers, has not passed windows logo testing to verify its
compatibility with windows xp." what can i do to fix this?

Nothing. The manufacturer has to release drivers that have been certified by WHQL. You best bet
would be to visit the manufacturer's website and look for updated drivers for your device that are
designed and tested for Windows XP

Do not worry about that warning just click install anyway and be done with
it. If it is a driver from canon then it will work fine.

We have 3 Canon devices (copier, printer, camera) and none of the install
programs for these work on our Windows XP SP2 machines. If we uninstall SP2,
the install programs work. We can then reinstall SP2 and (other than a pain
in our backside) everythings fine.
I'm not sure if this is the same problem you have, but XP SP2 and Canon
Installers don't like to play together on some machines.

That is because you have set the driver permissions to only allow certified
drivers to be installed.
Right click My Computer>Properties
On the hardware tab, click driver signing, check off 'warn' instead of
block, apply & ok.
Now install the drivers.
