Can't access Internet but can get e-mail
Posted by hankB on October 29th, 2005

My wife's computer runs Xp and this one Win 98.The wireless n/w is directly
cabled to 98 and reaches Xp via wireless and has been so for a year with no
problems.A couple of weeks ago Xp began being very rarely able to access
'net (we use Fiefox) and now not at all.
Going through IExplorer instead if Firefox searches for Microsoft (even
though I have set Google as home page) and then produces a window which
looks like a MS window
It states:
"IE has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the
inconvenience.
If you are in the middle of something, the informationyou are working on
,might be lost.PleasWe have an error reportthat you cansend to help us
improveIE.We will treat the reportas confidential and anonymous. To see the
data this error report contains, click here."(the last phrase is a highlit
link)
This doesn't sound like the usual terse MS syntax to me
There are 3 buttons-debug,send error report and don't send.Touching any of
them brings me back to the desktop .
I 've run Ad-aware,spybot and an old (8/05) version of McAfee.I am an "on
hold " faculty member at Tulane in New Orleans (now closed) and the computer
help desk is also closed;that is why my anti-virus is not updated.
This computer (98) runs fine;Xp sends and receives e-mail

Hank

have you run the LSP fix?
if you google it, the download is readily available.
sometimes running the following in a command window will restore it,
sometimes not...
netsh winsock reset
If you still have no access after running that and rebooting; remove the
network adapter from device manager, let XP reinstall it.
reconfigure as necessary

Google winsockxpfix.exe. It does the same thing as lspfix (for most of
us average users).

Your description is very chaotic. How can a wireless network have XP
"cabled to 98" and reaching XP via wireless? WTF are you talking
about? If it's a wireless network, what "cabling" are you talking
about?

Also, if you are getting e-mail on any of the machines, then you ARE
getting internet access. It sounds like you may have a problem with
IE - you could try reinstalling the latest version of IE and see if
that fixes the problem - but it's hard to tell from your less than
illustrious narrative.

If you receive and open mail on the machine, it should have a fully updated
AV app installed.

Your reflexively insulting comments are NOT appreciated. The router (not sure
that is the word you prefer) has a wireless antenna as well as jacks for
cable.Since it sits upstairs next to 98 I have directly connected 98 to it.I
would decribe this as "cabled"...what would you like to call it?
....BTW chaos for us New Orleans is defined differently than you use it.
-It is FEMA for deciding to move a ship which is completely filled with
workers who are rebuilding a local refinery which employees hundreds of
workers (and keeps your fuel coming) yet maintaining 2 more which are less
than1/4 full.
-It is SBA which have had 30,000 applications for 7 weeks and have
processed...drum roll please...less than 100!!
-It is Corps of Engineers which now admit that against earlier advice and
principles of hydrodynamics built levees with 15 feet deep pilings anchored
in soft earth next to a 20 foot deep canal -OOOPS!! They now plan to
rebuild the levee with 55 foot deep pilings-why not do it right the first
time?
It is Congress for refusing to rein in sculpture parks in Seattle and a
"bridge to nowhere" in Alaska which in the pre-Katrina budget cost HALF of
ALL wetlands reconstruction.
Why are we lending money for reconstruction to devastated US towns
(Louisiana has suffered the MOST military deaths in Iraq percentagewise)
yet giving it to the country with the world's second largest oil reserves?
Scariest Halloween ever!!
Thanks,
Hank

Make sure you run Adaware and Spybot from safe mode. Also make sure you have
the latest versions and updates. If need be download the latest versions and
updates to the win98 pc and burn them to CD or email them to the XP pc. You
should also download and run lspfix

http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm

Again, you will have to do this from the win98 pc and then transfer it to
the XP pc.

Once you have access to the Internet again the first thing you should do is
get an up to date antivirus. If your version of McAfee can't be updated
online then uninstall it and get a different one. Waiting until the
university is back online is not an option.

Thanks for your "reflexively insulting political drivel." I don't
care where you are from or what the situation is there. Your
description was very poor and I couldn't make heads or tails of it.
However, I still stand on this statement: if you can send/receive
e-mail on either machine, then you ARE connecting to the internet.
You are just having trouble with IE.

Have run Ad-aware and Spybot from safe mode and then Ispfix without
