Cant boot, Blue Screen then restart
Posted by Lellis2k via WindowsKB.com on October 4th, 2005

My friend has an HP Pavillion Laptop running xp, out of the blue one time
when she started it up she got the message that windows has recovered from a
serious error etc.. all of the boot options including last known good config
start up to the windows logo startup screen with the loading bar. Haf way
through you get a blue screen (mabe the one of death, its too quick to tell)
and the whole thing starts over. She has over a gigs worth of data she wants
to keep, mostly songs.

I have tried:
*to set the bios settings to default, no change.
*to do a chkdsk, freezes for at least an hour on 75%.
*to do a recover, i get the c: prompt cant browse the dirs and dont know what
to do at the prompt.
*to install windowsxp over the top, it says the c: is corrupt or not
formatted (bad, i know) so i didnt want to format it as she wants her data
back.

i know of the bootfromcd windows clones but dont know where to get one (free)
apart from taking it to a shop and getting charged a fortune, what can i do?

Thanx, Leigh

It looks asif that's a serious hardware failure of the hard drive or other
hardware, but you might be able to recover the data.

Visit the links that have to do with creating a BartPE recovery CD in this

First off, when these type issues happen the thing to keep in mind is to
approach it SLOWLY and METHODICALLY. Your steps may have
actually cascaded the problems. Setting BIOS defaults would possibly
change device settings. You should have let Chkdsk finish - Impatience
got you there. Obviously the disk/partition has corruption issues. The
fact that a repair install reports the disk isn't formatted isn't good. When
you got to the Recovery Console prompt you should have done a
Chkdsk /P. But Chkdsk in the course of fixing inconsistencies or errors
may remove some % of the data on the drive. At this point, the system
probably needs Professional help. Someone who has diagnostic tools &
hardware to recover whatever is left of her data.
