Can't change my "open with" file association
Posted by rob on October 26th, 2005

I want to change the program that opens a file with a particular extension,
however when I browse to the new program it will not accept it as the default
setting nor will it display it in the list of available programs.

Go to My Computer --> Tools --> Folder Options --> File Types --> locate the
file type you want to change associations for, then click the "Change" button
and choose the program you want to open the file with. Doing it this way
makes the change permanent (or until you amend it again).

You can also right click the file and choose "Open With" from the menu and
choose it that way.

You should be able to associate it using Folder Options, File Types dialog
or directly using the registry. Optionally, to make the application listed
in the Open-With dialog, you may use the utility available in the following
page:

Registering a program with the "Open With" dialog:
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/openwithadd.htm

Download OpenWithAdd.zip and run it. Locate the application that you want to
add to the Open With dialog. Click the "Add to Open with" button once.
