Can't copy pictures
Posted by BK on March 15th, 2006

Using Windows XP-Pro and a Sony digital camera.

I am able to copy pictures from my digital camera into My Pictures
subfolders on my hard drive and display and view them without any problem.

When I try to copy a group of photos from my hard drive onto a USB(1) key
drive, certain pictures corrupt the process. They will not copy and will
lock up the system which will then not even complete the shut down process.
I must hold in the power button until the system does a hard shut down.

When I reboot, and try to copy even just one picture at a time, there is
always one in the bunch that corrupts the process and I have to go through
the hard shut down procedure again. There doesn't seem to be any
identifiable difference among my pictures.

Any ideas?????

Hi
Just a suggestion.....
Try providing a few more details in your post. Such as, OS version, CPU,
memory capacity, any error messages in the event viewer, etc...
The more information you provide, the more likely that someone will be able
to help you.

I did mention that I am using Windows XP-Pro as my operating system. 384
meg memory and 450 MHz processor.

No error message other than "cannot copy"

Once you identify a single picture that triggers a failure, can you reboot
and copy that picture by itself without copying any others?
The system specs you provided are close to the bare minimum for running
Windows XP alone. Copying large files such as photos use a lot of memory.
Have you thought about adding more memory to your system?
I previously had a computer with the same specs and added memory bringing
the total to 768Mb and many of the problems of the type you describe
disappeared.
Have you looked at the event viewer for any error messages?
Also, have you tried copying other large files to the USB device? You could
rule out corruption of the photos themselves if the same thing happens to
other types of files.

I had come to the same conclusion you just mailed--bare minimum system
specs. To answer your questions:

No, once a photo triggers a copy failure, I cannot copy it by itself. I can
still view it and print it from my hard drive, and I can copy it to another
folder on my hard drive, but I cannot copy it to an external device.

The only error message is "cannot copy file--be sure the path and filename
are correct."

I think it's probably time we looked at a new system or upgrading the memory
on this one.
