Under Windows XP, I can't create .fnd "saved search" files that
remember which directory is to be searched.

Here's what I'm doing:
1. Start -> Search -> Files or Folders.
2. Get rid of the stupid animated puppy.
3. Where it says "Look in", choose "Browse" and navigate to the
desired directory.
4. I type nothing in the "file name" or "word or phase" fields, as my
purpose is to search everything in the desired directory.
5. Click Search.
6. A search of all files in my chosen directory didn't take long. But
if it had, I could have clicked "Stop" during the search.
7. Select File -> Save Search and choose and appropriate filename/
location for a new .fnd "saved search" file.
8. Close the search window and double-click the new .fnd file to test
it out.

Under XP, I have never gotten the above process to work. When I open
the .fnd file I created, it never remembers the right directory to
search in, and wants to search the root directory (C:\) of my hard
drive instead.

This is especially frustrating because the above process (minus Step 2
to get rid of the puppy!) worked perfectly on Windows 2000. In fact,
my XP machine can easily open .fnd files *created with Windows 2000*
in exactly the right way, remembering the right directory and
everything. The process only fails when *saving .fnd files with
Windows XP*.

So what gives? Is there a way to fix this? I know I could just
download Agent Ransack, but I'd rather stick with the software I'm
familiar with, as long as that software isn't entirely broken.
