Can't delete or rename folder on XP
Posted by Mark on November 10th, 2005

Hello

I've a Win XP SP 2 all patches put, which has a strabge problem:

It is impossible to rename or delete folders with Explorer. There is no
error message at all.
Nevertheless, iti is still possible with the Shell.

I tried Scandisk and browsed the knowledge base but didn't find anything.

Any ideas?

Regards,

Marc

Hi,

Interference in the Windows shell is nearly always indicative of
spyware/adware on the system. These can help:

AdawareII www.lavasoft.de
Spybot www.safer-networking.org

From MVP Richard Harper on cleaning up malware infested systems:
http://rgharper.mvps.org/cleanit.htm

This one can help you avoid these programs from being installed in the first
place:
Spyware Blaster: www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

Hi Marc,

Did you check the permissions of that particular part of the filesystem?
In Englisch: any change made to the Security properties if you
rightclick any directory or map on that particular drive/volume?

Second of all: are you logged on to the system as "Administrator" ?

Third and finally: any changes made recently?

Even the most casual click and modification on a (part)of the filesytem
may have changed some new security feauture that came with the SP2-addon
- yes, SP2 is an extention for WinXP not just a big patch of hotfix !

I myself cannot access or change a certain map on my bootdisk C (a small
one, so I don't care): I played around with the more advanced security
features of SP2 and couldn't undo what I just had done !

I'm still trying and learning what SP2 is all about ...

Let us know how this turns out for you !

Hi

No Spyware is ont the system, no virus can bedetected. I avoid using IE
whenever possible.

No chnages have been made when this problem appeared.

I have all the rights to do any operations on the folders.

Shame on me, I found a knowledgebase articke, describing exactly this
behavior at home and did not bookmark it. All searches later on were in
vain...

Regards,

Marc
