I am trying to install windows xp pro on Dell Inspiron 7000. First, during
"copying set up files" it can't find several dll files all beginning with
usrxxx. Then the install will get to 4th step and will lock up when
"installing devices" bar is about 55% complete. It does the exact same thing
on 2 different xp cd's! I posted message before when I had tried first cd
and someone replied start in safe mode. It did start in safe mode but came
up with message something like windows cannot continue installing in safe
mode. That is when I decided it may be a windows cd problem and tried new
(different) cd. New cd did exactly same thing as first cd.
Does anybody have any ideas?

To do a clean install, boot the Windows XP install CD-Rom. Setup inspects
your computer's hardware configuration and then begins to install the Setup
and driver files. When the Windows XP Professional screen appears, press
ENTER to set up Windows XP Professional.

Read the license agreement, and then press the F8 key to accept the terms of
the license agreement and continue the installation.

When the Windows XP Professional Setup screen appears, all the existing
partitions and the unpartitioned spaces are listed for each physical hard
disk. Use the ARROW keys to select the partitions Press D to delete an
existing partition, If you press D to delete an existing partition, you must
then press L (or press ENTER, and then press L if it is the System
partition) to confirm that you want to delete the partition. Repeat this
step for each of the existing partitions When all the partitions are deleted
press F3 to exit setup, (to avoid unexpected drive letter assignments with
your new install) then restart the pc then when you get to this point in
setup again select the unpartitioned space, and then press C to create a new
partition and specify the size (if required). Windows will by default use
all available space.

Be sure to apply SP2 or at least these two below to your new install before
connecting to any network.

Here's something else to try. I've had the hang up at "Starting Windows
Setup" screen and the "Installing Devices" screen. I've eliminated the
hang-up and had successful install with this:

Boot from CD, when the screen displays 'Press F6 if you need to install a
third party SCSI or RAID driver' press F5 instead. After a short delay, you
have a screen that allows you to select the Hardware Abstraction Layer. The

what your are suggesting?

Good idea - I'll check that next, thanks for help.
PS. I can see windows install locking up over bios issue or driver, or
several other things, but I sure would like to know why, when copying files
in set up it looks for and can't find the several usrxxxxx.dlll files!

Cdrom's ok - I think. I just realized this is PII, however I found flash
bios upgrade for xp and dell inspiron 7000 on dell site and i ran it, trying
to see what happens now.

Since it is a P2 and you seem to be getting stuck with the usrxxx files, I would suggest that you either remove or disconnect you very old US Robotics modem which possibly dates back to the mid 90,s. Try installing the OS without any USR(US Robotics Product)

downloading updates right now. I could kick myself for not thinking of this
hours ago so I really appreciate you getting me on track. I know it's an old
unit but I wanted to get it running and give it to my wife so I could get her
off my pc! It runs internet explorer and that's all she needs - now if i can
keep the bugs, spyware and adware of it, we will both be happy. Thanks again
