can't find os
Posted by jcaldw737 on October 19th, 2005

when i try to boot, i get a message that it can't find the os.

if i put an xp cd in and reboot, i get a message to press any key to boot
from cd.

if i DON'T press any key, it boots from my hard drive (I know this because i
can remove the cd right away and it boots)

any help would be greatly appreicated.

If you don't press a key does it boot into WinXP and load it properly?

yes, if i don't press a key, it boots fine from the hard drive.

But the problem is that I have to leave the XP CD in my CD drive when I shut
down my computer.

I don't always remember to do that, and when I start my computer the next
time the first attempt to boot doesn't work. Then I have to insert the XP CD
and reboot.

thanks,

Try this:
- Set your BIOS so that the CD drive is the first boot device.
- Boot the machine with your WinXP CD.
- Select Repair.
- Select Recovery Console.
- Type these commands:
fixboot
fixmbr
exit
