cant get my mic to work
Posted by ------------daz-------------- on November 10th, 2005

im on xp pro sp2, and have been using msn messenger.
i have a mic on my headset and one on my cam but i cant get sound from
either which makes me think im doing something wrong.

i dont have a sound card but its built into my mobo (dfi inf ultra) i have
two jacks at the front (pink and green, which my headphone is attached to)
and four jacs at the back, which my two small speakers are attached to
the sound comes out of my speakers and headphone speakers no problem.

ive been through sounds and audio devices numerous times, everything is
turned to high.
in the audio tab in sound recording i have two options, nvidia nforce audio
and cam, ive tried both to no avail,
under voice+ audio tab they are both set as nvidia nforce audio
under master volume everything is high, mic boost is ticked, but tone
controls are greyed out, dont know if that is significant or not
nothing is muted
device manager doesnt show any problems
the nforce control panel has mic turned up full, mic boost ticked, under
input i have chosen microphone and its turned to full under the main tab

i have tried using the sound recorder but that doesnt work either

under device manager, sound, video and game controllers i have (in order)
audio codecs
legacy audio drivers
legacy video capture devices
logitech microphone (messenger)
media control devices
nvidia nforce audio codec interface
nvidia nforce mcp audio processing unit dolby digital
standard game port
video codecs

should i have ac97?
i also tried the setup on messenger and its the same, headphones are fine,
nothing from mic

someone please help, im in the uk and have a young daughter who lives in
arizona, i can see her on cam and am desperate to talk to her, its just not
the same typing

thanks in advance for any help

Disable the Cam mic in the Device Manager and see if it doesn't work then.

Also check to see if there are any updates for your on board sound card.

well i had nvidia 2.45 so i updated it to 4.62a. my cam mic now works so
thanks for that.
headphones mic still doesnt, i try disabling cam mic, but no difference,
maybe the mic is just broken.

i went to update the nvidia nforce audio codec and it found c media ac97
online, only when i re booted i had no sound at all, im a bit confused, why
would it choose to update to ac97 if it wouldnt work at all??
