I need to install Adobe photoshop 4.0 in my new laptop in order to install
the upgrades up to PS CS2 (XP Media Center Edition). When I try to run I
get a message" the program requires at least 3MB of free memory to run".
(have 1 GB of ram, 25 GB of free space). I've tried the software
compatibility wizard or whatever it's called and I get the same message.
I've right clicked on the Photoshop icon in the CDRom in My Computer, and
there's no compatibility tab option. If there are patches or drivers, I
can't find them. Help!! thanks

Really? It just asked me to insert the former version's CD
in the CD-RW drive. Worked like a charm.

For Photoshop CS upgrade disc in this new pc, it asked for ver. 5.0 or
later. So I used a 7.0 upgrade disc, which asked for 4.0. Everything was
going fine, inserting the 4.0 disc for verification, then replacing it with
the 7.0 disc. There is a warning to ignore the "auto play" menu if it pops
up. The problem I see now is that a menu popped up to apparently start the
installation process over again, but because it wasn't called the "autoplay"
menu, as I'd seen before, and I didn't ignore it. Everything kind of froze at
that point. Finally, I ignored that one and everything went fine. I hope
this process in more streamlined in future OS's. Thanks for your post. Case
closed.

There is a patch that helped me get Photoshop 4.0 to work in XP MCE, it
is located at http://tinyurl.com/gjn2x and you can run the 4.0 patch.
