- CD Key Verification
- Posted by Gibgo on November 3rd, 2005
Good day
Can anyone tell me is there a way to verify by a cd key whether a cd key is
valid or not. Does Microsoft have some kind of service for such a situation.
Thanks

A Windows XP Product Key is only valid when used with
the correct Windows XP installation CD. Microsoft cannot
validate your Product Key unless you install Windows XP
using the correct Windows XP installation CD.

when you say "is there a way to verify by a cd key whether a cd key is
valid or not" what exactly do you mean?
If the key follows a particular argorithm then it is valid if it allows
you to install XP (or other windows products) on your system. Once this
has been done, XP needs to be activated. This is where you are likely
to hit a snag because the key might have been compromised or used by
somebody.
So the only way is to install and and then to try to activate it
online. If it fails you need to pick up the phone and explain your
plight to MS customer service staff if they can help. If they can't,
then it is time to run to your nearest store and get a new XP license.
