Change the name of Admin$ under shares
Posted by Kimlyn on October 4th, 2005

Hi,
I'm running XP SP2 and WinServ2K3
Is there a way to delete ADMIN$ and create a new name for it?
Thanks,
Kimlyn

Here's the scoop on the hidden shares:

How to create and delete hidden or administrative shares on client computers
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=314984

You'll note the article states that the hidden shares that are created
by the computer, including ADMIN$, will be recreated when the PC is
rebooted or the Server service is stopped and restarted.

That doesn't mean you can't get rid of them. The following article
outlines some of the errors that may occur if these shares do get
totally disabled:

Overview of problems that may occur when administrative shares are missing
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=842715

Included is details on how to correct the problem so that the hidden
shares will be created. If, after reading that, you still want to
remove ADMIN$, do the opposite of the appropriate steps in the
resolution section of the article.
