- *.com applications won't run
- Posted by Stewart on December 30th, 2005
Win XP Pro
I don't know if a registry cleaner or a virus has rendered commands that
have .com extensions not to work. Either from the Run command or executing
from the windows\system32 folder, they load and lock on the black DOS screen.
Regedit.com will not run yet regedit32.exe from this folder will run. CMD has
the same result.
Cntrl-Alt-Delete to the windows security screen, but when choosing
taskmanager it disappears completely.
Will the recovery console fix this?
An overlay of the OP system on the existing?
Or is it a format job.

Regedit.com is malware, time to use Spybot, Adware, and your favorite
virus checker.

There is no regedit.com under WinXP, only regedit.exe and
regedt32.exe. The same with cmd: there is no cmd.com.
Perhaps some spyware has renamed some of your files. Here
are the entries as I find them on my PC:
04/08/2004 00:56 146,432 regedit.exe
04/08/2004 00:56 388,608 cmd.exe

Regedit.com malware will blank your cmd window when run.
To make sure you can even run .COM files:
Right click on "My Computer", Properties, Advanced, Environment
Variables, below double click on PATHEXT
and make sure .COM is listed
Mine: .COM;.EXE;.BAT;.CMD;.VBS;.VBE;.JS;.JSE;.WSF;.WSH
