- computer freeze

My compter freezes when the desktop opens. The keyboard and mouse do not
work. The only thing I can do is turn off and restart. Than the same thing
happens. Suggestions?

Looks like a virus or spyware infection.
What was the screen like? Did it stop at the Logon screen? Or did it just
show your background and nothing else? Usually if you can't logon to desktop
(with all the icons), there is something very wrong with the user account or
the system files. It could be a driver conflict, or a hardware conflict, or
a virus infection.
Try to log on in Safe Mode and see if your computer can boot up. If it
won't, than it's very likely that there is a hardware conflict or a
virus/worm.

Try XP Safe Mode (F8 @ XP load screen).
I guess it's a problem with the user account.
Anyway, whaile in safe mode, chek Administrative Tools/Event Viewer
It should tell you what service(s) failed to load.

All the icons come up and the mouse pointer. It than freezes.
