Could not Authenticate to Server
Posted by MP81 on March 19th, 2006

Hi, I just built this computer in early february, all of a sudden, about two
weeks ago, i started getting this error "Could not authenticate to server"
popping up at startup of windows. I thought it had to do with my scanner
which doesn't like XP, so i uninstalled it, but the error remained. So I did
a system restore back to before I installed the scanner (a day or two
before), and the error went away. But about two days ago, it came back. I
click retry and it keeps coming back, but when I get online (yes, dial up),
and click retry, it'll go away. But upon restart, when windows starts up,
bam, it's back. A friend said it might be from windows not authenticating
correctly back at the beginning... When I first authenticated windows, I had
reformatted the hard drive after the initial one, so i authenticated windows
twice, but since I was still having problems with boot-up, so I reformatted,
and when I went to authenticate, it said I had used the code too many times.
So I turned it off, and the next morning, I went to authenticate it, and it
worked fine...

Any Ideas what may be causing this annoying error?

Check the date/time on your machine and make sure it's correct.

Also, see if you have Google Talk which is known to have this issue:
