Default e-mail client
Posted by Rich Pasco on November 4th, 2005

When I click on a "mailto:" link on a web page in MS Internet Explorer,
it always opens Outlook Express. How can I get it to open my default
e-mail client, Netscape Mail? I already selected Netscape Mail in
MSIE's Tools/Internet Options/Programs (for e-mail) but this doesn't
stop MSIE from opening Outlook Express anyway.

Open IE, select Tools, Internet Options, click the Programs tab.......what
do you have in the E-mail preference?
Heirloom, old and might be it

Rich,

Select OE from the list, and choose Apply. Close the dialog. Repeat it and
this time set Netscape as the default. If not, try making the changes
directly in the Folder Options / File Types dialog. You'll need to modify
the URL:MailTo Protocol settings so that it is handled by Netscape Mail.

To do this directly in the Windows registry, change the command path here:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\mailto\shell\open\command

As I stated in my original post, it says Netscape Mail (which I want),
but Outlook Express really pops up.

This worked, thanks. Changing it to OE and then back to Netscape Mail
made it work. I'm happy now.

The Folder Options / File Types dialog contans lots of URK:something
Protocols, but URL:MailTo is not listed among them.

I checked this after making the changes above, and it now points to
C:\PROGRA~1\NETSCAPE\NETSCP.EXE as it should.

Thanks again,

- Rich

Also check Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs > Set Program Access and

Yes, thanks for your suggestion, Roland. I thought I had already done
the obvious. The subtle thing that Ramesh spotted is that to make it
stick I had to undo it and do it again.
