Default Email program with XP
Posted by Robert on December 7th, 2005

Can anyone please help?

How do you configure XP so Outlook Express can be the default email program?

I've already tried changing the settings in Outlook Express itself, but
that's not working. XP always want to use "Outlook" as the default email
program, which automatically loads with MS Office.

There must be some way to tweak something in XP so I could send webpages and
links from webpages with out XP telling me there is no profile set up in
Outlook.

Anyone know how?

Thanks for the support

Why don't you uninstall OL if you don't use it. For OE

Type in Start Run

Msimn /reg

then set it the default in it's Tools - Options -.General.

Can't uninstall Outlook, it's all part of Microsoft Office. I would have to
completely uninstall Office just to get rid of Outlook.

Says who? You can install as much or as little of Office as you want. I have Word only from Office 97, all applications of Office 2000 but not accessories, just document imaging from Office XP.

Which office do you have? They all will have both a Change and Remove button in Add/Remove Programs. There is a picture below that shows what I mean. You'll need to use a newsreader to see it.

I have 2003 Office. I just uninstalled the Outlook portion of Office. Now
there is no longer an emal button at the top of Internet Explorer. So unless
I add back office, I appears I will no longer be able to click a button in
IE6 to access my email program (Outlook Express somehow) and sent a page or a
link to a page.

BTW, I was hoping for the command that I was once given in old Windows 98.
I had the same problem, and someone once gave me a command to edit my
registry, to make Outlook Express the default email program, that overided
Outlook.

Any ideas, because just getting rid of Outlook doesn't look like it's
cutting it.

Neither of the two previous posts work, Now What? As soon as I close outlook
express, and then reopn it, the options says that outlook express is not the
default email program.

Also, as noted above, since I uninstalled Outlook form Office, there is no
longer a mail button in IE6 to use to quickly send links from webpages.

Yeah David, I tried that. However I just got a fix under my post at the XP
"basics" section, by a Paul Malbon, his solutions was to do the following
noted below, and it did the trick. Thanks David however for your efforts and
support....I really appreciate your time and effort.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Control Panel -> Add/remove programs -> Click the 'Set program access and
defaults' button on the left hand side.
Click the custom bar (or whichever bar is selected by a dot in the radio
button) look down the list till you see 'Choose a default mail application'
(or something similar) and select outlook express.

In Internet Explorer (I know, I know...., It's not particularly
intuitive.), click Tools > Internet Options > Programs, and then select
the default EMail client of choice. (I use Thunderbird, myself.)

That's the wrong place, although one certainly wouldn't think so. ;-}

Actually, it's the installation of Outlook that automatically sets
Outlook as the default, not WinXP, but this is easily changed back to
your own preference, as detailed above.

Only if you select a "Typical" installation of Office. If you select
the "Custom" installation, you can choose which Office components to
either install or omit.

Again, in Internet Explorer (I know, I know...., It's not particularly
intuitive.), click Tools > Internet Options > Programs, and then select
the default EMail client of choice.

That's not true, at all. You can always pick and choose which specific
Office components you want to have.
