- Defrag disk??
- Posted by PaulT on October 3rd, 2005
This is the first time I am trying to defrag our Dell PC, we've had it only
a few months so until now it wasn't needed. I always used PerfectDisk on
our other older computers and it did a great job but when I installed it
this time and ran it it took almost 2 hours to do only 64%, I uninstalled
that and ran XP's Defrag program and that is taking just as long... I have a
80Gig Maxtor HD with no partitions in it... anyone help here???

Run it overnite.
If the drive has much data on it and is really frgmented it takes time.
You can speed things up a little by clearing out the TEMP folder and dumping the contents of
the IE and other Browser caches.

Initial defrag sessions can and do take that length of time. The
time is derived from the level of fragmentation and how much
of the existing content must be moved. You should have let PD
continue. Usually, after the initial defrag subsequent sessions
will complete in much less time.

I can imagine circumstances where, on a slow machine with a really badly
fragged disk, that even a small HD might take hours to defrag the first
time. And "a few months" is plenty of time to frag a disk nearly to the
breaking point. Why not just let PerfectDisk have its way with the disk
until it finishes? If you are doing something else, sleeping for
example, the time will seem to go by quickly and watching it isn't going
to make it do a better job. If your version of PerfectDisk offers it, do
the offline defrag before doing the smartplacement run. If a second
defrag run takes over 1/2 hour a few days later then you probably have
some deeper problems.

You should not have any other apps running while defragging - it forces
defrag to start over and over.
Do a dskchck first - either in HDD/Properties/Tools/Error Check or Run
chkdsk /f.
Normally, defrag would not run on a dirty disk, but give it a try.
Also, a boot time defrag would run fast. Diskeeper trial version might (not
sure) be enabled for this.

I have no probs with PD6 and love it!!! Fast!!! Gotta get 7!!! How big
is the partition and how much stuff on it? Even my 3.1gb XP (not counting
swap) only takes about 10-15 min on first defrag.
Also:
1 defrag.
2 offline defrag (to get the directories)
3.defrag.
Also I always use smart placement defrag on all drives.
hope that helps! ("hth")

If it's badly fragmented, taking a long time is normal. How much free space
is on the HD? Did you disable your AV's auto scan before starting the
defrag?

Don't stand around and watch it. Boot into the SAFE mode so no programs
will try to run during defrag. If anything changes on your hard drive
during defrag it has to start over again. Step 1- boot into SAFE mode,
Step 2- start defrag, Step 3- go to bed.
